Martin Luther King, Jr., Day is a federal holiday on the third Monday in January, which honors the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For more information, watch this nine-minute video: “The Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. | Civil Rights Movement” (9:44, PBS).

President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986.

“America is a more democratic nation, a more just nation, a more peaceful nation because Martin Luther King Jr became her pre-eminent non-violent commander.”—Ronald Reagan

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, both Aging and Disability Services offices are closed.
