November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time when we show special appreciation and support for the caregivers who provide unpaid care for older adults and people with disabilities in their families.

Aging and Disability Services (ADS), the Area Agency on Aging for Seattle and King County, is proud to join its City and community partners in presenting the “Legacy of Love” African American Caregivers Forum each November. It’s a unique, culturally focused event where professionals and family caregivers from across the Pacific Northwest share the challenges and joys of caring for loved ones. It gives participants an opportunity to revive, refresh, and connect with other caregivers.

The 2024 Legacy of Love Forum will be Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Northwest African American Museum, 2300 S. Massachusetts St. in Seattle. In addition to ADS, the forum is sponsored by AARP Washington, African American Elders Program, Sound Generations, Age Friendly Seattle, the City of Seattle’s Human Services Department, and the Mayor’s Council on African American Elders.

There is no charge to participate in the forum, but please pre-register here to attend.

The keynote speaker for this year’s forum is Beverly Kimmons, MFT, MSMC, CPC, a dedicated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) professional with nearly 15 years of experience working to increase awareness and understanding of brain health and Alzheimer’s disease in underserved communities. She is DEI director for the Washington State Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and is regional DEI lead for staff in Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. Kimmons also serves on the Washington State Dementia Action Collaborative and the Community Advisory Board for the University of Washington’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

The forum also will include a panel of caregivers sharing their experiences with moderator Sharon Sobers-Outlaw, MSW; a Q&A with filmmaker David Wild (Today Was a Good Day); and an End of Life Pre-Planning presentation by Cydney Barnes, Owner and CEO, Live to Leave Your Legacy.

The Legacy of Love forum is a great opportunity to recognize, support, and empower family caregivers. It can help them find balance in providing care despite the demands of work and family by accessing a wealth of community services and supports.
