Position Announcement for ADS Division Director
We are pleased to announce the Human Services Department is now accepting applications for the ADS Division Director position. The position closes Tuesday, December 13 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).
As manager of the Seattle-King County Area Agency on Aging, the ADS Director will play a pivotal role in local, state and national policy setting for older adults, and provide leadership in our regional and state efforts to align with Federal healthcare reform and work to enhance overall healthcare results and quality.

MCAAE hosts Candidates and Catfish Lunch Forum
This year’s theme was Top Concerns of Seniors: Health, Housing & Transportation. About 65 were in attendance, including seniors, Advisory Council members, community members, providers, and City and County Council candidates.
MCAAE members presented a Community Champion Award to the African American Elders Program for their outstanding service to elders in King County, and the panel of candidates responded to questions regarding transportation, utility rates, and senior centers.

Draft 2012-2015 Area Plan on Aging Available for Public Comment
ADS will host three public hearings to accept comments on both the draft 2012-2015 Area Plan on Aging and the draft 2012 Discretionary Allocations.

Focus on the Future Forum: Innovations for Accountable Care
Over 100 representatives from state and local government, health care organizations, and community-based agencies participated in the Innovations in Accountable Care, an ADS Focus on the Future Forum. The goals of the forum were to:
- Explore innovative ideas in accountable care.
- Reflect on how community partners can play a role in creating and implement new approaches.
- Spark discussions between current and potential partners.
- Assesss interest in participating in learning networks.

ADS Needs Your Input - Area Plan Survey
To help Aging and Disability Services (ADS) identify key strategies that will promote quality of life, independence and choice for older people and adults with disabilities, we invite you to participate in a brief survey, and especially encourage residents who are age 60 and older or adults with disabilities to respond.
The survey will be available through April 29, 2011 and should take 10 minutes to complete. Your responses will inform the development of ADS's 2012-2015 Area Plan on Aging. Family Caregiver Programs RFI/RFP Process: Application deadline March 4, 2011
ADS is accepting applications for funding for the Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP), a county-wide system of care and support for persons who are the unpaid informal and primary caregivers for their loved ones: spouses, family and close friends. The RFI is available on the Human services website: www.seattle.gov/humanservices/funding/

Home Care RFQ Process - Application Deadline 2/22/2011
ADS is offering organizations an opportunity to submit a Request for Qualification (RFQ) to provide Community Options Program Entry System (COPES) and Medicaid Personal Care (MPC) in-home services for the care of medically frail and/or disabled persons throughout King County. Contract awards will be made for the period of July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012. The deadline to submit Homecare RFQ applications is 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 22, 2011.

ADS Awarded "Farm to Table" CPPW Grant
ADS will develop a Farm to Table project to improve access to and affordability of fresh local produce in senior nutrition and childcare programs. The project outcomes include connecting 3 senior meal sites with local farmers by June 2011 and expanding the Farm to Table model to childcare settings and other senior meal programs through March 2012.
Partners include: Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Farm to Schools Program; Puget Sound Food Network (PSFN); Early Learning and Family Support (ELFS), a division of the Seattle Human Services Department; King County Housing Authority; and ADS funded senior nutrition providers including Catholic Community Services, Lifelong Aids Association/ Chicken Soup Brigade, and Senior Services.

Caregivers Needed for Technology Survey
The National Alliance for Caregiving is conducting a survey on technology and its impact on family caregivers. The objectives of this survey include:
- Understanding the frequency of both Internet and device technology being used by caregivers;
- Understanding the impact of technology on both the caregiver and the care recipient; and
- Determining the unmet technological needs of the caregiver

Seattle Older Adult Policy Goals and Recommendations
The final report, Seattle for a Lifetime: City Goals for Older Adults, was sumbitted to the City Council on August 3, 2010. ADS anticipates the council will conduct a hearing on the report by the end of September.

Public Comment Period on 2011 Discretionary Allocations
The ADS Sponsors have approved for public review the preliminary strategies for allocating 2011 discretionary funds to service areas. Included in discretionary funds are federal Older Americans Act (OAA) and state Senior Citizens Services Act (SCSA) funds totaling approximately $6.4 M.
You are invited to attend a public hearing hosted by the Advisory Council on Aging and Disability Services following their monthly meeting on Friday, August 13 at 2:15 pm. Please contact Karen Winston if you plan to attend the public hearing.

Seattle Council Confirms Members of New Commission for People with Disabilities
Seattle City Council has confirmed the first fourteen people who will serve as commissioners on the new Seattle Commission for People with Disabilities.
Mark Adreon, Joshua Caple, Rebecca C. Cory, Charlene Curtiss, Patricia Copeland, John Denooyer, Hope Drummond, Vickie Foster, Laura Gramer, Mary Beth Lum, Erica Sekins, Gary Stobbe, Deborah Witmer, and Sara Woody will serve on the volunteer commission that will advise the Mayor, City Council, and City departments on issues affecting people with disabilities, as well as help to foster understanding between people with disabilities and City government.
The mission of the Seattle Commission for People with Disabilities (SCPWD) is to promote the full participation of people with disabilities in all areas of economic, political, and community life in the City of Seattle.

KUOW radio airs series on aging
A story on affordable housing for seniors, "A Quiet Crisis," refers to the Seattle Human Services Department's Aging & Disability Services (ADS) division projections that the number of seniors living in poverty will double by the year 2025.
A third story, "Who's Caring For The Caregiver?", discusses services to help caregivers cope with stress. KUOW reporter Ruby de Luna worked closely with ADS staff on these stories.

for children in Washington State who are being raised now or in the past by a relative other than their parents.
The contest honors both the children and the more than 37,000 relatives in Washington State who are raising them. Contest entries must be received by April 16, 2010.

MCAAE Hosts Healthcare and Healthy Aging Breakfast Forum
About 50 older adults and community members attended the August 8th Healthcare & Healthy Aging Breakfast Forum, co-sponsored by the Mayor's Council on African American Elders (MCAAE), the Central Area Senior Center, and HSD. Forum panelists included State Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos (37th Dist), Senator Adam Kline (37th Dist), Senator Ed Murray (43rd Dist), and David Loud, Community Liaison for Congressman Jim McDermott. Alan Painter, HSD Director was the panel moderator. The discussion included economic challenges faced by Washington State legislators, health disparities, and health care reform.

Members are appointed by one of the three ADS Sponsors (United Way, King County, and City of Seattle). The terms are two years with a limit of two terms for King County and the City of Seattle; United Way has a three term limit.
