2008 Legislative Forum
The ADS Advisory Council, in collaboration with the Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care Advisory Board, hosted a Legislative Forum on September 17, 2008 for policy makers, legislators, advocates and the general public. The theme for this year's biennial event forum was "Aging Readiness: The Legislative Challenge."
Tony Lee, Advocacy Director with Solid Ground, got things started with an inspirational talk on effective advocacy strategies. Bob Drewel, Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council, delivered an informative keynote on building aging-friendly communties in the region. Representatives Dawn Morrell (25th District) and Jeannie Darneille (27th) discussed their many important legislative efforts on behalf of older adults, and looked ahead to the next session.
Other speakers included Kathy Leitch of the Washington Aging and Disability Services Administration, Peter Greenfield of Columbia Legal Services, Dennis Mahar of the Lewis-Mason-Thurston Area Agency on Aging, Jerry Reilly of Public Policy Consultants, and Pamela Piering, Director of Aging and Disability Services.
According to the forum evaluations, the event was very well received, and many participants left feeling energized heading into what looks to be a challenging legislative season.
